The Tony Award-winning Best Play returns to Broadway in a “near-miraculous production” of “mind-bending splendor” (The New York Times).

Zurich, 1917 - Take one part Wilde, a touch of Lenin, a dash of Dada, a pinch of Joyce and you’ve got Tom Stoppard’s absurdly hilarious Travesties. The wildest revolutionary minds of the 20th century come alive in this romantic and achingly funny modern masterpiece.

Roundabout reunites with playwright Stoppard (The Real Thing) and director Patrick Marber (Closer) for a dazzling revival from London’s Menier Chocolate Factory (The Color Purple). 2017 Olivier nominee Tom Hollander leads the cast.

Reviews

  • Stoppard offers much to ponder about the intersection of art, commerce, and politics. And in between the constant digressions, we get such pointed observations as "War is capitalism with gloves off."Director Patrick Marber must be commended for enlivening the high-brow farce with delightfully madcap interludes.
  • Yet in Patrick Marber’s well-judged and high-spirited revival, which the director first staged in London in 2016 (with Hollander and McDonald), the result is inviting rather than snobbishly exclusive, and the structural and verbal dazzle are offset with subtle suggestions of elegy. Even if you can’t solve it all as you watch, it’s a pleasure to engage with a production that does Travesties full justice.
  • Broadway's spry revival of "Travesties" is guaranteed to work your gray matter. Its author is brainy British playwright Tom Stoppard; that's how he rolls. The happy bonus of the brightly acted Roundabout production at the American Airlines Theater is how often the 1974 comedy engages one's smile muscles. Hollander, reprising his role from London, is silly and sycophantic as he motors the show. The rest of the cast is as polished. Scarlett Strallen, Sara Topham, Opal Alladin and Patrick Kerr round out the ensemble.
