It’s Christmas Eve, and Ed has gathered his three adult sons to celebrate with matching pajamas, trash-talking, and Chinese takeout. But when a question they can’t answer interrupts their holiday cheer, they are forced to confront their own identities. Obie Award-winning playwright Young Jean Lee takes a hilariously ruthless look at the classic American father-son drama.

This is one white Christmas like you’ve never seen before. Featuring Kate Bornstein, Josh Charles, Ty DeFoe, Armie Hammer, Stephen Payne, Paul Schneider

The New York Times has named Obie Award winner Young Jean Lee (Church and We're Gonna Die both at The Public) "the most adventurous downtown playwright of her generation."

  • Straight White Men - a smart, funny and affecting play that reaffirms Lee’s status as one of the most important playwrights working today, questions traditional notions of what a successful life might mean ...
  • [Young Jean] Lee is the first female Asian-American playwright on Broadway, and Straight White Men is no simple, dramatized condemnation of them or easy shooting of cultural fish in barrels. Indeed, it is surprisingly affectionate about the SWM, even if the play is ultimately an examination of the privilege the liberal—and ostensibly culturally sensitive—characters on stage shrug off or not even consider, until they are forced to question what giving that privilege up means. And so you wait for evidence of “Straight White Men.” You wait for the homophobia, misogyny, and racism of the men, or a commentary on such things, but it doesn’t come.
  • It's all immeasurably enhanced by Second Stage's first class production helmed by Anna D. Shapiro. Stephen Payne is most impressive as a last-minute replacement. Josh Charles, Armie Hammer, and Paul Schneider, all making their Broadway debuts, are excellent as well.
