60 Years. 12 Prime Ministers. 1 Queen.

For sixty years, Queen Elizabeth II has met with each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a private weekly meeting, a meeting known as The Audience. Academy Award® winner Helen Mirren returns to Broadway, and the throne, in a riveting new play by Peter Morgan, the writer of the Academy Award-nominated film, The Queen.

Directed by two-time Tony Award® winner Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, An Inspector Calls), The Audience takes theatregoers behind the walls of Buckingham Palace and into the private chambers of Queen Elizabeth II as she meets with each of her Prime Ministers, from when she was a young mother to now as a Great Grandmother. Through these private audiences, we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch.

Reviews

  • Helen Mirren once again gives a faultless performance that transcends mere impersonation to endow the monarch with a sense of inner life and a quasi-Shakespearean aura of solitude.

    -----The Guardian
  • At best, Morgan paints a picture of a woman involved and very serious — constancy incarnate. PM Cameron says as much when he declares that she represents an “unbroken line.”
That’s sort of like Mirren’s devotion to acting. New York is fortunate to have an audience with her.

  • 4 STARS!!
Whether you know your 20th-century Parliamentary history or simply get an Anglophile high from tea service and footmen in livery, Mirren rules in this engaging and humanizing retrospective. The Brits may sing about God saving their queen, but I think she takes care of herself just fine.
