The hilarious and provocative Hand to God centers on shy, inquisitive student Jason, who finds an outlet for his burgeoning creativity at the Christian Puppet Ministry in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet small town of Cypress, Texas.

Jason’s complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door and—most especially—his mother are thrown into further upheaval when Jason’s hand puppet Tyrone—once soft-spoken—takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. As Tyrone’s influence over Jason steadily grows, Hand to God explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us.

Reviews

  • This play is not for the faint of heart. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with an aversion to blood, profanity, or puppets. Everyone else is guaranteed to have one crazy night of hilarious and unforgettable theater.

  • At the same time, Mr. Boyer establishes Tyrone as a such a singular presence, with his snarky snarl of a voice, that you soon find yourself considering him, as Jason does, as a malign entity independent from the benevolent character to whom he is attached (and of whom he is, obviously, a psychic alter ego clad in friendly-looking felt). It’s a virtuosic performance.....

    ------New York Times
  • Askins’ most impressive talent, though is his ability to make us laugh while juggling those big themes that make life so terrifying:  death; depression; alcoholism; sexual guilt; emotional repression; religious hypocrisy; and the eternal battle between your good puppet and your bad puppet.
