A new work from the Tony Award winning playwright of The Curious Incident…

A random encounter. An uncertain act. An unexpected journey of the heart.

Amidst the bustle of a crowded London train station, Georgie spots Alex, a much older man, and plants a kiss on his neck. This electric encounter thrusts these two strangers into a fascinating and life-changing game. Directed by Drama Desk Award winner Mark Brokaw (How I Learned to Drive), Heisenberg brings to blazing, theatrical life the uncertain and often comical sparring match that is human connection.

Internationally renowned for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, visionary playwright Simon Stephens returns to the New York stage with this sharply original world premiere starring Denis Arndt (Basic Instinct) and Tony® and Emmy® winner Mary-Louise Parker (Proof, Weeds)

Reviews

  • Exceptional individuals seem to hold a powerful attraction for Simon Stephens. The British playwright created one such memorable stage character in Christopher Boone, the boy math whiz in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” Georgie Burns — the eccentric American woman in “Heisenberg,” a slight if gracefully written two-character play commissioned by the Manhattan Theater Club — is another kind of exceptional individual, the kind of unstable person you normally avoid making eye contact with. Lucky for her, Georgie is played by Mary-Louise Parker, who has a rare gift for sympathetic portraits of the weirdos of the world.

  • Just because two people are in proximity, you know that something either wonderful or terrible is going to happen, and the possibilities are almost too exciting to tolerate.Such is the response generated by the stars (and the entire cast) of “Heisenberg.” They are Mary-Louise Parker and Denis Arndt, and, for my money, they’re the sexiest couple on a New York stage just now. (Apologies to Gil and George, the geriatric roommates in the comedy“Oh, Hello on Broadway.”) Whether either or neither conforms to your specific romantic type, you’ll find it hard not to agree.

  • Perhaps it’s the uncertainty principle at work, but one of last year’s best dramas has somehow become one of this year’s best comedies. I’m referring to Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Simon Stephens’sHeisenberg, which opened tonight on Broadway, following an acclaimed Off Broadway run in 2015. Oddly, not much has changed on the surface of what I originally called a liberating and scary new play: The two-person cast — Mary-Louise Parker and Denis Arndt — is still terrific, with Parker doing her best stage work in years, and Arndt again a wonderful surprise to New York audiences. (He has spent most of his career on the West Coast.)
