On the heels of her Academy Award®-winning, breakout performance in 12 Years a Slave, Lupita Nyong'o stunned critics and audiences in the Public Theater's sold-out hit Eclipsed - the "scorching and powerful" (The Guardian) new play by Zimbabwean-American playwright and actress Danai Gurira (star of AMC’s The Walking Dead and co-author of In the Continuum)

Eclipsed is the story of five extraordinary women brought together by upheaval in their homeland of Liberia. They forge a close-knit community… one that inspires them to feats of increasingly greater strength.

Directed by South African-born Liesl Tommy (The Good Negro, Appropriate), Eclipsed is a stirring tale of hope, humor and resilience - and the only new play by a woman on Broadway this season.

Reviews

  • Following a critically acclaimed run at the Public Theater, Eclipsed has moved uptown to the John Golden Theatre. Its arrival marks Gurira's Broadway debut as a playwright (she appeared as an actor in the 2009 revival of Joe Turner's Come and Gone). At the same time, her new comedy, Familiar, has audiences rolling in the aisles at Playwrights Horizons. Gurira seems to be having a well-deserved moment right now. Few American playwrights are as versatile and thought-provoking, as this excellent production proves that at every turn.

  • Under the bright lights of Broadway, where escapist fare or genteel revivals most often thrive, Ms. Gurira’s play, directed with clarity and force by Liesl Tommy, reminds us of something profoundly important, and perhaps too easily forgotten amid our own country’s continuing racial troubles: African lives matter.

    -----New York Times
  • Lupita Nyong’o spends the opening moments of “Eclipsed” hidden from sight. As soon as this “12 Years a Slave” Oscar winner is exposed, however, there’s no concealing the fact that she is a natural in her Broadway debut — powerful, poignant, thoroughly convincing as a 15-year-old girl surviving any way she can during wartime in Africa. It’s a common lament that there are no good roles for women. But Danai Gurira, a playwright and actress known as Michonne on “The Walking Dead,” has packed this harrowing, albeit sometimes heavy-handed, 2008 drama with five of them.
