Inspired by the true story of the first Chinese woman to step foot in America, Lloyd Suh’s critically-acclaimed play, THE CHINESE LADY, is a tale of dark poetic whimsy and a unique portrait of the United States as seen through the eyes of a young Chinese girl. In 1834, 16-year-old Afong Moy sailed into New York Harbor and was immediately put on display for a paying public who were mesmerized by her exotic ways and horrified by her tiny bound feet. As audiences follow Moy’s travels through America as a living exhibit for decades, THE CHINESE LADY reveals centuries of America’s shameful colonial history.

COVID Safety Information:
All audience members must be fully vaccinated; a complete vaccination means having received a final FDA Authorized or Approved or a WHO Emergency Use Listing vaccination dose at least 14 days before the attendance date. Learn more about approved vaccines below.
Beginning Friday, January 21, 2022, we will require proof of a COVID booster shot for all those eligible to receive it. Those not yet eligible will be able to continue to enter The Public as long as they are two weeks past their second dose in a two-dose vaccine series or two weeks after receiving a single-dose vaccine. Those not yet eligible will be able to continue to enter but are required to receive the booster shot shortly after they become eligible.
For those who are not eligible for a booster until after January 21, 2022, we will allow a two-week grace period to schedule and receive the booster upon becoming eligible. After the two weeks have passed, entry will not be allowed until the booster has been received. Recipients of the Pfizer (age 16+) or Moderna (age 18+) vaccines become eligible for a booster six months after their second dose, and recipients of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine become eligible two months after their single dose. Learn more about booster eligibility per the CDC below.
Vaccines are now available for children ages 5–11, and fully vaccinated children are welcome at The Public two weeks after they have received their final dose. Photo ID for children under 16 will not be required as long as they are accompanied by parents/guardians with valid photo ID.
Negative COVID tests for audience members, including children, will not be accepted as an alternative to vaccination proof. The Public has ended its additional Negative COVID test requirement, initially implemented on December 17, as of January 21, 2022, when this new policy goes into effect.
All audience members must provide in-person verification of vaccination. Prior to entering The Public Theater and all of our facilities.
Approved face masks will be required at all times, including while watching a performance, except while actively eating and drinking.
Public Theater staff and artists are subject to a mandatory vaccination policy.
All policies are subject to change at The Public’s sole discretion and without notice.
Those that do not abide by any health and safety protocols will be denied entry or removed from the facility.
