When the lights come up after 90 thrilling and utterly shocking minutes, neither is left standing.The Olivier Award-winning Blackbird made its New York debut in 2007 in a production of Manhattan Theatre Club. This version reunites Daniels with his original director, Joe Mantello, but this is no mere remounting. While it's been nine years, this disquieting drama remains powerful as ever.

Daniels plays Ray, who is 55; Williams plays Una, who is 27. Fifteen years before the action of the play, they had a three-month sexual relationship. You do the math. But this horrifying information, divulged early on, is just the set-up, for this is not a tract or a brief that sticks to the conventional line of inquiry informing most discussions of pedophilia and sex abuse. The fact of the crime, for which Ray served a relatively short sentence of three years and seven months, is not, onstage, the end of the story. Without in any way glamorizing the situation, Blackbird so complicates the questions of consent and trauma and recovery — and even love — that it would be difficult to look at any of these subjects the same way again.

Likewise, I’m quite familiar with David Harrower’s hellishly compelling 2005 play Blackbird. I reviewed it Off Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club and later logged hours with the script, writing an essay for the Best Plays Yearbook series. Yet years later, there I was at the Belasco, craning forward, then recoiling, as Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams clawed at each other’s psyches and bodies, playing ex-lovers or, to be precise, a pedophile and his victim: She was 12 and he was 40. Blackbird is a comfortless 80-minute reckoning of arrested time and soiled innocence.
