Regina by Marc Blitzstein
The Bronx Opera Company begins our 49th consecutive season of opera in New York City with a production of Marc Blitzstein's American classic, REGINA. Set in 1900 Alabama, REGINA adapted from Lillian Hellman's classic play THE LITTLE FOXES centers on Regina Giddens and her brothers, Ben and Oscar Hubbard. They plan a business deal that will make them rich and powerful, at the expense of the community they already have extensively exploited, including members of their own family. It’s too late for her husband, Horace, and sister-in-law, Birdie, to escape; but her daughter Alexandra stands up to Regina and leaves her alone with her hard-won wealth.
Blitzstein adds an eclectic mix of American musical styles that led Leonard Bernstein to write that in REGINA, Blitzstein "(Coats) the wormwood with sugar, and (scents) with magnolia blossoms the cursed house in which these evils transpire."
A work which was known and loved by Bernstein, Copland, and Frank Loesser, Blitzstein's stated goal was to write something as real to Americans as Italian opera is to Italians.
