Angels in America, Parts I & 2
Neil Simon Theatre
250 W 52nd St, New York, NY 10019Set in late 1985 and early 1986, as the first wave of the AIDS epidemic in America is escalating and Ronald Reagan has been elected to a second term in the White House, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony -Award winning play's two parts, Millennium Approaches and Perestroika, bring together a young gay man with AIDS and his frightened, unfaithful lover; a closeted Mormon lawyer and his valium-addicted wife; the infamous New York lawyer Roy Cohn; an African-American male nurse; a Mormon housewife from Utah; and a steel-winged, prophecy-bearing angel; as well as the ghost of Ethel Rosenberg, an ancient rabbi, the world's oldest living Bolshevik and a Reagan administration functionary, among many others -- all played by a company of eight actors.
The lives of these disparate characters intersect, intertwine, collide and are blown apart during a time of heartbreak, reaction and transformation. Ranging from earth to heaven, from the political to the intimate to the visionary and supernatural, Angels in America is an epic exploration of love, justice, identity and theology, of the difficulty, terror and necessity of change
***In this new staging, Part One presents half of the story and you won’t get the full experience without seeing how it ends. Part Two picks up the story and characters, and may be hard to follow without having seen Part One.
***Part One: Millennium Approaches is 3 hours and 30 minutes
Part Two: Perestroika is 4 hours
Both parts have two 15-minute intermissions.

Sometimes, just when you need it most, a play courses into your system like a transfusion of new blood. You feel freshly awakened to the infinite possibilities not only of theater but also of the teeming world beyond. And when you hit the streets afterward, every one of your senses is singing.
Such is the effect of seeing the flat-out fabulous revival of Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America,” which opened on Sunday night at the Neil Simon Theater, with a top-flight cast led by Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane in career-high performances. This is the 25th anniversary production of Mr. Kushner’s two-part, seven-and-a-half-hour multi-award-winning masterwork about death and destruction in Ronald Reagan’s America. -
“The world only spins forward,” declares the defiant prophet Prior Walter in Angels in America. But as the world turns, it returns things to our shifting fields of vision. So it is with Tony Kushner’s expansive and shattering masterpiece, which is back on Broadway for the first time since its 1993 premiere, in a production of magnificent tenderness and sinew. Heaven, such as it is, be praised! Angels in America has arrived again. The great work continues.

The new production, first seen at the National Theatre in London, arrives in New York with virtually all of its cast intact, with only the superb Lee Pace replacing Russell Tovey in the role of Joe Pitt. The director, the two-time Tony winner Marianne Elliott (“War Horse,” “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”), has assembled a first-rate ensemble, led by Nathan Lane as Roy Cohn and Andrew Garfield as Prior.
