Songs of World War I
There are tenors, and then there is Ian Bostridge, who is his own category. Is there a more admired singer in the world today than this British artist, whether in opera, orchestral, or recital repertoire?
He defines the word eclectic, which is why everyone wants him all the time (the Queen apparently also noticed, and made him a CBE in 2004). But it’s his unique and challenging programs that set him apart, like the one he will bring to McCarter. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I (our “forgotten” war), he will explore the music and poetry of The Great War, including settings by George Butterworth and Kurt Weill, of poems by A.E. Housman and Walt Whitman, plus “war songs” by Ivor Gurney, Mahler, Lehar, and of course, Benjamin Britten.
