Two-time Emmy Award® winner and Golden Globe Award® winner Bruce Willis makes his Broadway debut alongside three-time Emmy Award® winner Laurie Metcalf this fall in Misery, the edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller.

Following a near fatal car accident, a world-famous novelist finds himself in a strange house being nursed back to health by his doting, self-proclaimed Number One Fan. But as her love for his work turns to dangerous obsession, he realizes he must plot his greatest story yet: how to escape with his life.

Adapted for the Broadway stage by two-time Academy Award® winner William Goldman, Misery is based on the classic Stephen King novel.

The box-office catnip is Willis, totally convincing in his first play since his early off-Broadway days in the ’80s. For more than half of the 90-minute thrill ride, Paul is mostly a head, immobilized with broken legs, his face stitched together like Frankenstein’s creature. Eventually, Willis gets to flex a few of his action-hero muscles. And, yes, he does his own stunts.

Luckily, director Will Frears and stars Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalf are all in synch with the plot’s lack of serious intent. The opening scene is staged in near darkness, as Annie tends to Paul’s wounds while he’s still in a comatose state. When the lights come on in her house and the story proceeds, it’s thrilling to explore scenic designer David Korins’ (Hamilton) magnificent set, which rotates clockwise to reveal the precisely detailed interiors and snow-covered front exterior of Annie’s house.

Bruce Willis finds himself in a die-hard situation unlike those he’s vanquished on screen, and he does it with aplomb in a strong performance, as he engages in figuring out how to outsmart his calculating captor. Laurie Metcalf delivers throughout. There’s no mistaking this is a vehicle for her, and she rides it as if besting a mechanical bull. The audience eats it up with a soupspoon.
