Oscar® and three-time Tony® winner Mark Rylance, following his acclaimed performance in the hit film Dunkirk, returns to the stage in Farinelli and the King. This captivating new play arrives on Broadway after sold-out runs at Shakespeare’s Globe and on London’s West End.

It tells the true story of Philippe V (Rylance), a Spanish monarch on the brink of madness. He finds unexpected solace in the voice of world-renowned castrato Farinelli, a role brought to life by two esteemed performers – West End actor Sam Crane and countertenor Iestyn Davies.

Like Broadway’s Twelfth Night and Richard III, this contemporary work is presented in the signature style of Shakespeare’s Globe – traditional baroque instruments are played live in a gallery above the stage; the audience enjoys intimate seating with several rows onstage; and the story is told by candlelight, creating an enchanting theatergoing experience.

Reviews

  • "Watching Rylance ... is heart-rending and unforgettable. ... His ability to reveal the deep humanity of the character without ever sacrificing a concomitant humility (in one of his more subtle portrayals to date) is the stuff of great acting – and Rylance is a great actor in the fullest sense of the term."
  • The play’s bright creative stroke is having Sam Crane, who’s wonderfully sympathetic, act the part of Carlo, and sweet-voiced countertenor Iestyn Davies sing as Farinelli. (James Hall sings at some performances.) As selections by Handel are sung, both actors stand side-by-side in near-mirror images. It’s a stirring comment on one man’s duality.
  • John Dove has taken such pains to re-create the heavily gilded style of the formal Baroque setting of this production, which originated at Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in 2015. The richly textured costumes look especially sumptuous in the blaze of candlelight (supplied by designer Paul Russell), and the period musical instruments — harpsichord, violins, viola, theorbo, Baroque guitar — all sing true, especially as stripped of all mechanical amplification.
