A modern take on William Shakespeare’s Hamlet from a young and eclectic international company.
First Maria Theatre Company presents HAMLET by William Shakespeare, directed by celeste Moratti. Directed and adapted by Celeste Moratti (Italy), with Alexander Sovronsky in the role of Hamlet, this modern take on Shakespeare’s masterpiece zeroes in on one of the most universally relatable aspects of the play: the mistakes of mothers and fathers (who are either being overbearingly present or absent to the point of becoming ghostly images of themselves) and their children, who pay dearly for the previous generation’s mistakes and weaknesses.
The production is set in late '70s to early '80s, during the wave of hedonism that abruptly ended with AIDS. That's meant to frame the play in an awakening of conscience—especially in Hamlet but also in everyone else. Hamlet then becomes a coming-of-age tale, the tale of a sheltered child who in a critical instance receives from his father an impossible order (“Revenge...but do not taint thy mind”), and is forced to realize the horrible consequences that growing into a man imply.
The presence on stage of a Greek-style chorus and live music performed by Francesco Santalucia and Papaceccio highlight this struggle between filial duty and the emerging of conscience.
