It was not love at first collaboration when playwright Qui Nguyen and director May Adrales initially worked together in 2009. But a few years later, when they started on Vietgone, inspired by Nguyen's parents' love story, they realized opposites can enact some kick-ass theatre. That play's sequel Poor Yella Rednecks, currently at Manhattan Theatre Club, continues the tale of Quang and Tong as they chase the American dream in 1970s Arkansas. Like Vietgone, it's a tantalizing twist on the immigrant's journey genre, full of sex, profanity, puppetry, kung fu and lots of heart.
