From its debut in 1906 when Asch was encouraged to burn it, to the 1923 Broadway production when the cast and the producers were thrown in jail on obsenity charges, God of Vengeance has always provoked controversy.

Explosive in its conflicted portrayal of Judaism, "God of Vengeance" tells the heart-wrenching story of a brothel owner's attempt to shepherd his daughter to religious observance and a respectable marriage, only to watch her plummet into the life of sin in which he raised her. The subject of Paula Vogel's "Indecent," the show is credited with presenting the first lesbian kiss on Broadway

Got fun nekome is directed by Fringe Festival founder Aaron Beall and presented by New Yiddish Rep, a company that stages plays in Yiddish for diverse audiences, especially non-Yiddish speakers. Got fun nekome premiered on East 4th Street in 1907, in what is now La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theater, next door! The premiere starred the legendary David Kessler in the role of Yekel.
