From the moment he appears in a sequined top, platform heels and a floor-length fur coat, Broadway veteran Anthony Wayne embodies the starring role with a boulder-crunching zeal that echoes Hugh Jackman's Tony-winning turn as Peter Allen in "The Boy from Oz."

And while his performance naturally dominates the show, Mr. Wayne has ample musical support from a vocally superb supporting cast: Anastacia McCleskey and Jacqueline B. Arnold portray Izora Rhodes Armstead and Martha Wash, who began as Sylvester’s big-boned backup singers and later went on to make their own hefty splash on the dance floor as the Weather Girls with their immortal hit “It’s Raining Men.” (The audience might tear apart the seats if this beloved disco chestnut had not been heard, and so it is.)
