Maybe you're familiar with the 6 roles in a dysfunctional family? The Addict, the Enabler, the Hero, the Scapegoat, the Lost Child and of course…the Mascot. Growing up with an alcoholic mother, two older brothers and an extremely stressed out father, Rob Ryan tries to pinpoint the role HE played in his broken home throughout this hilarious and touching piece.
Starting with his childhood, Rob uses his stand-up and storytelling skills to walk us through one outrageously funny and Child-Protective-Services-inducing tale after another. Soon we're entrenched in his life and his family. We're rooting for his mother to heal, his brothers to flourish and his father to just catch a break. Laughs, though, turn to misfortune and misfortune to tragedy. Yet somehow, the show finds the humor again...and perhaps that's the point. The Mascot is able to help us find the absurdity, the humor and the joy in all of it. The good and the bad.
