In the hour-long work Magloire looks at the roots of Romanticism: raw emotions, bold gestures, and a defiant embrace of risk. The ballet is inspired by the music of Wolfgang Rihm, a contemporary German composer whose stormy and engaging works will be played live by New Chamber Ballet’s superb musicians, pianist Melody Fader and violinist Doori Na.
The Night pairs Rihm’s languid violin solo Über Die Linie VII with a set of temperamental duets for piano and violin: Phantom Und Eskapade, the extravagant Violin Sonata, and the hypnotic Antlitz.
The Night is the opening event of Strange Scenes, a two-month long festival celebrating the music of Wolfgang Rihm, jointly presented by New Chamber Ballet, the Mivos Quartet, the Ekmeles vocal ensemble, and select musical soloists, with the support of the German Consulate New York.
"It's heartening to see work so focused on the meeting of dance and music... always you're aware of an intelligence at work that resists Romantic cliché." - The New York Times
